Housewife in trouble for injuring 7-year-old maid

34-year-old housewife Mary John has been arrested and charged in Lagos State for allegedly assaulting, beating and injuring 7-year-old housemaid John Victory.

PMEXPRESS reports that the incident occurred on August 6, 2024, on Adewusi Street, near Synagogue Church in Ikotun area of ​​Lagos, where they reside.

According to police, the suspect repeatedly attacked the victim, so that the neighbors became aware of it and tried in vain to intervene.

On the day the incident occurred, the suspect was said to have severely assaulted the victim and hit her with a stone before neighbours intervened and informed the Ikotun District Police.

She was arrested and detained at the Family Support Unit to be interrogated over her alleged conduct. After interrogation, she was found guilty of her conduct and the police subsequently charged her before the Ogba Magistrate's Court for the alleged assault.

The indictment states, among other things:

“That you, John Mary, ‘F., on the 6th day of August, 2024 at about 9:45 p.m., at No. 14, Adewusi Street, Off Synagogue Church, Ikotun Lagos, in the Lagos Magistrates’ Area, did assault one John Victory, ‘F’, aged 7 years, by striking her and inflicting injuries on her, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 10 of the Lagos State Child Rights Act, 2015.”

Count II: That you, John Mary, ‘F’, on the same date, time and place in the above-mentioned district, did threaten to hit one Victory John ‘F’, aged 7 years, with a stone and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 56(2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”

However, she pleaded not guilty.

The public prosecutor, Supol Akeem Raji, asked the court to set a date for the hearing since she pleaded not guilty to enable the police to prove that she had actually committed the crime she was accused of.

The presiding judge, Mr LA Owolabi, released them on bail pending the submission of two sureties to provide proof of their livelihood and tax payments. Their addresses will be verified by the court.

The case was adjourned for remand while the accused remained in custody at the Kirikiri Town Correctional Centre in Lagos pending the completion of her bail conditions.
