Over the past few years, the Washington, DC barbecue scene has been showing off its skills. But is any local grill master worthy of being crowned World Food Champion? Some of the region's best grill masters will compete for the title this weekend.

The second annual All Star BBQ Championship takes place this Saturday in Columbia, Maryland. There is a $5,000 prize purse up for grabs, as well as a spot in the finals of the World Food Championships this fall.

“Everyone can vote on who they think is the best grill master,” said Dave Anderson, who you may know better as “Famous Dave” from his barbecue restaurant. His Famous Dave's restaurant in Columbia is hosting the event this weekend.

“You can try out some barbecue dishes. You can watch the grill masters at work and maybe even ask them a few questions about how they make the best barbecue,” Anderson said.

Categories include best barbecued chicken, best barbecued ribs, and a wildcard category where the chef essentially decides and can submit anything they want.

“This is where it gets really interesting because this is where they can show off their skills – this is where originality, creativity, anything is possible,” said Anderson. “It's incredible what they do. From desserts to some of the main dishes. But it's all barbecue.”

The competition will take place on Saturday, August 24th, from 11am to 4pm and, in addition to free rehearsals, there will be music and games for the whole family.

“Barbecue is America's feast. We have a great time with it,” Anderson said. “Everyone is welcome. It's like one big, great barbecue party.”

The winner will compete in the World Food Championships in Indianapolis in November. The top prize for this event is $150,000, with a total prize pool of around $400,000 available.
