Driver charged after two fatal OVI accidents

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – An Avondale woman faces multiple charges in connection with a drunken-driving car crash that killed her two passengers earlier this summer, according to court records.

A Hamilton County grand jury indicted 33-year-old Crystal Burns on a total of nine counts: four counts of aggravated vehicular manslaughter, two counts each of vehicular manslaughter and negligent homicide, and three counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs and/or a combination of both.

She is being held without bail in the county jail and is scheduled to make her first court appearance at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

According to the accident report and indictment, Cincinnati police said Burns was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana and had cocaine in his system at the time of the June 7 accident on Vine Street near Beldare Avenue in Avondale.

She lost control of a 2010 Nissan Altima on a curve on Vine Street, causing the vehicle to leave the road and strike a utility pole around 1:50 a.m., the accident report states.

Burns and her two passengers were all seriously injured and taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

The passenger died. The accident report identifies her as 35-year-old Tyler Owens of Over-the-Rhine.

Nearly two weeks later, the second passenger, Dillon Thompson of Walnut Hills, died from his injuries, the report said.

According to police, the blood alcohol limit in a test to determine her blood alcohol level was 0.176 per mille.

That's a little more than double the speed limit for driving in Ohio.
