Enzo Maresca reveals the extent of his injury to Cole Palmer after leaving the win with a hamstring injury

Enzo Maresca has revealed the extent of Cole Palmer's injury sustained during the 2-0 win against Servette in the first leg of the Europa Conference League play-offs.

Palmer was Chelsea's best player last season, scoring 25 goals in all competitions and providing 15 assists in his first season at the club. Having played a good European Championship with England since then, he should have another good season at club level.

But already in the second game of the season in the playoff round of the Europa Conference League, the attacker seemed to have possibly injured himself when he left the 2-0 win against Servette after a 32-minute cameo from the bench with a thigh injury.

However, after a sharp gasp from Chelsea fans, Maresca announced that he did not believe this would be a long-term problem for his attacker.

“Cole felt something, but he looks good,” Maresca explained.

“Hopefully it won’t be a problem and he can be available for the game on Sunday [at Wolves].”

After a defeat in their first game of the Premier League season, the Blues will be looking to pick up three points in their next game and a game against Wolves offers a good opportunity to do so.

Palmer scored in a 4-2 defeat to the Molineux outfit last season, so his availability could be crucial in turning things around.

He will likely undergo a scan to ensure there are no issues following a potential injury in Europe, but Maresca's initial thoughts appear to be positive for Chelsea ahead of the weekend.

The manager also praised his team for winning in Europe, but believes some things need to change.

“We are learning to manage the game,” he said.

“Keeping the ball is the right intention when the score is 2-0, but where things aren't going well is in our half. We have to do the same on the other side. It was important to win the game with nine substitutions. There were a lot of good things.”
