Search continues in Sterling, MA for worker killed in rockfall – NBC Boston

Rescue operations will resume in Sterling, Massachusetts on Friday after a worker was trapped and killed by a falling rock on an industrial site.

Emergency services searched for the man’s body for almost 24 hours.

The incident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday at a quarry on Stone Crest Way, according to the Worcester District Attorney's Office.

Emergency crews used camera equipment to examine the scene and found that there were no signs of life. The worker was pronounced dead at 8:39 a.m.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration inspected the site to check the safety of recovery operations. An agency official said there was no estimate when the investigation into the accident would be completed.

The site and waste disposal facility are owned by Onyx Corporation, which said in a statement Thursday morning that all of its sites would remain closed over the weekend.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family of our long-time employee and friend who was killed this morning in a tragic accident at our Sterling sand and gravel pit. He was operating an excavator within the safety zone of a 100-foot rock wall when the wall collapsed,” the company said in a statement.

The man’s name is not being released at this time.
