Elmira man charged with murder in June shooting

A Chemung County grand jury has indicted an Elmira man on murder and weapons charges in connection with a fatal shooting on Elmira's north side in June.

Marcus A. Jones-Snyder, 27, faces four charges, including second-degree murder and three weapons offenses, in connection with the killing of 21-year-old Zachary T. Van Horn of Elmira.

Police first received a report of a gunshot victim in the 400 block of Grove Street around 5 p.m. on June 20. Emergency responders found Van Horn with a gunshot wound at 417 Grove Street. He was taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead.

Elmira police said Jones-Snyder was considered a suspect in the shooting investigation and detectives and patrol officers were “working tirelessly to find him.”

The Elmira Police Department was assisted in the investigation by the Chemung County Sheriff's Office, West Elmira Police Department and New York State Police.

The second-degree murder charge states that Jones-Snyder caused Van Horn's death by shooting him in the chest with a handgun.
