Mother charged in wrong-way driving accident – NBC New York

A 32-year-old woman is to be brought to court on Friday for drunk driving. The reason for the dramatic accident was a wrong-way driving accident in which the engine of her vehicle was thrown into the forest with such force.

Four cars were involved in the 2:20 a.m. crash Thursday on the Southern State Parkway near Exit 42 in Islip. Authorities say Kerri Bedrick was driving the car, which was traveling the wrong way. Her 9-year-old son, who was buckled in the back seat, died of his injuries at the hospital. Bedrick and the other people involved in the crash were not seriously injured.

Bedrick, of Centerport, was charged with driving without a license, driving under the influence of drugs, driving under the influence of alcohol with a child under 16, endangering the welfare of a child and illegal possession of a stimulant, police said.

Authorities allege that Bedrick refused to stop when officers noticed she was driving the wrong way before the crash and instead sped up. They claim it appears she was driving the wrong way on Sunrise Highway before merging onto the Southern State Parkway.

Bedrick said nothing when she was picked up from a police station on Thursday evening. She appeared distraught.

Information about the Centerport woman's attorney was not immediately clear.

Authorities are asking anyone who saw the ghost vehicle before the accident or has any other information to contact New York State Police at 631-756-3300.
