DELPHI, Indiana – The closed hearing for Delphi murder suspect Richard Allen ended at 1:37 p.m. Friday, and the subsequent public hearing was canceled.

“There is no public hearing,” Carroll County Sheriff Tony Liggett said as he left the courtroom at 1:37 p.m. “That's all I can tell you. That's all.”

The crowd of stunned reporters, podcasters, the public and the families of the victims then began to leave the hall.

Indiana State Police officers and others entered a room with the family of victim Libby German. It is unknown what was said behind those closed doors.

Allen is charged with two counts of murder and two counts of murder in the commission of a kidnapping. Prosecutors allege Allen killed German and Abby Williams on the afternoon of February 13, 2017, east of the Monon High Bridge.

The case remained unsolved for nearly six years until October 26, 2022, when state police arrested Allen, who lived and worked in Delphi.

Since his arrest, Allen and his case have drawn national and international attention at every hearing and trial proposal, and Friday was no exception.

Before noon, media representatives were already waiting outside the Carroll Circuit Courtroom on the third floor of the courthouse.

Although those waiting did not see Allen being led through the back door of the courtroom, they heard the unmistakable sounds of a prisoner shuffling back and forth in the hallway, his shackles clinking in rhythm with his steps.

About twenty minutes after the hearing was adjourned, the west side of the courthouse was swarmed with security forces and a caravan of police cars drove away.
