Bears' Douglas Coleman III in hospital after serious tackle injury

Chicago Bears cornerback Douglas Coleman III was carted off the field in a horrific scene Thursday night after being injured during a tackle attempt in the second half of his team's final preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 26-year-old former CFL star lay motionless on the ground after tackling Chiefs tight end Cornell Powell on the first play of the second half.

Coleman appeared to hit Powell near the Chiefs' sideline, but the blow caused his neck to bend awkwardly.

He fell to the ground while trainers rushed to his aid. Players from both teams surrounded Coleman until he was eventually treated by doctors on the field.

Coleman had his face mask removed and was strapped to a backboard before being wheeled out of the stadium.

Bears coach Matt Eberflus, who had seen Coleman before he was admitted to the hospital, gave a brief update on his condition in his postgame remarks.

“When I was on the field, over there on the Chiefs sideline, he was moving his limbs and giving us the thumbs up,” Eberflus said, “so that was good to see. That's all I know. He's in the hospital right now being checked out.”

Coleman played college football at Texas Tech before signing with the Denver Broncos in 2020 after going undrafted. He spent the last three years with the Ottawa Redblacks, where he alternated between safety and linebacker. Last season, he appeared in 17 games, recording 60 tackles, four sacks, three interceptions, and both interception and fumble returns for touchdowns.
