COLOMBIAN – A Montevallo man charged with murder was found guilty Thursday, Aug. 22, after a four-day trial.

Corey Antwon Broadnax, who has been in custody of the Shelby County Jail since February 13, 2023, was convicted of shooting and subsequently murdering Shante Hudson on February 11, 2023.

According to police records, Hudson, a family member of Broadnax's estranged wife, attended a wake on the day of the shooting that Broadnax also attended.

During the wake, Broadnax got into a public argument with his wife, in which Hudson tried to mediate.

In response to Hudson's involvement, Broadnax shot him eight times at close range and fled the scene.

Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Hudson was later pronounced dead from his injuries at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster. Broadnax was arrested two days later following a manhunt.

“The senseless shooting of Mr. Hudson by Mr. Broadnax was heinous and tragic for the Hudson family,” said District Attorney Matt Casey. “We hope this sentencing brings closure to the family and serves as a reminder to all who commit acts of violence in our community that we will vigorously pursue your prosecutions.”

The case against Broadnax was investigated and handled by the Montevallo Police Department, with Assistant District Attorney Ben Fuller and Deputy District Attorney Sara Beth prosecuting.

Broadnax has now been found guilty of murder and is awaiting sentencing.

Although the court has not yet announced a sentencing date, Broadnax, who has already been convicted of two other crimes, faces a possible sentence of between 99 years and life in prison under Alabama's Habitual Felony Offender Act.
