Arlington Heights man charged with hate crime after argument with security guard

David A. Martin Sr.

An Arlington Heights man is facing hate crime charges after police recently yelled “racial slurs and profanities” at a black security guard who worked as a security guard at a real estate office in downtown Arlington Heights.

David A. Martin Sr., 54, was arrested shortly before 8 p.m. on Aug. 17 outside a business in the 0-100 block of South Evergreen Avenue in downtown Arlington Heights, police reports show.

According to court documents, the security guard was alerted by an employee at a nearby Starbucks that Martin was causing a disturbance outside the coffee shop. When the security guard approached Martin, he began yelling profanities and “playing and singing music that evoked racial slurs,” police reports say.

When the security guard tried to leave, Martin allegedly followed him and threatened to attack him and have someone else attack him as well, court documents say.

Shortly afterwards, the police arrived and arrested Martin.

Court records also show that Martin's arrest occurred on his 54th birthday.

Martin was denied pretrial release and remains in custody at the Cook County Jail.

Martin's next court date is September 13 at the Cook County Courthouse in Rolling Meadows.
