Suspect injured in alleged car theft attempt

Tazewell County officials said a shooting occurred in Falls Mills, Virginia, Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 1:15 p.m., 911 dispatch received a call from a citizen reporting a man with a knife attempting to stab another man near Mudfork Road in Tazewell, Virginia. While officers were discussing this incident, they heard a gunshot.

Another 911 call was made and the same officers responded to the call at Lee's Cargo near Falls Mills. Upon arrival, officers found the suspect lying on the ground with a bullet in his chest.

According to authorities, the suspect was identified as 30-year-old Cody Dailey of Bluefield, West Virginia.

According to the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office, the suspect attempted to steal a truck and attacked the driver of the vehicle.

An armed citizen came to the victim’s aid and approached Cody Dailey.

According to authorities, Dailey then attacked the citizen and knocked him to the ground.

Dailey continued to approach the citizen and fired a shot, hitting the suspect in the chest.

Dailey was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital for treatment of his gunshot wound; he is currently in stable condition.

He was wanted in Tazewell County District Court on two outstanding felony charges.
