Jay Littleton Ball Park, featured in the famous 90s film, burns down

The Jay Littleton Ball Park, the playing field featured in the 1992 film “A League of Their Own,” burned down in a wildfire in Ontario, California on Thursday.

According to ABC 7 News, the fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. The Ontario Fire Department rushed to the scene and was confronted with massive flames blazing from the stadium and the dugout. “Unfortunately, the extent of the fire… resulted in the complete loss of our stadium,” said Deputy Chief Michael Wedell. Despite all efforts, nothing could be done to save the popular venue, according to ABC 7 News.

Built in the 1930s and featuring a wood-frame grandstand, Jay Littleton Ball Park has served as a backdrop for many films, but became most famous after the filming of “A League of Their Own,” starring Tom Hanks, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell and Geena Davis.

The park is owned by the city and operated by the Department of Public Works and was declared a historic landmark in 2003. The entire community is devastated after learning that the baseball field has been destroyed.

The facility has been renovated several times, but authorities pointed out that there was probably a lot of old, dry wood left in the structure that would have burned quickly.

Aaron Matthiesen, president of the Ontario Eastern Little League, commented on the devastating loss. “It went up in flames like a matchbox… You're literally watching history burn,” he said.

“The dugout here on the third base line is where Tom Hanks said his legendary line: 'There's no crying in baseball!'” Matthiesen said, according to ABC News 7.

Matthiesen went on to say that the property had become run down in recent years.

“A lot of it has to do with homeless people coming in and breaking things and constantly causing problems that made it unsafe for our players on the field and for our spectators in the stands,” he said. He believes that may have played a role in the cause of the fire, according to ABC 7 News.

“That is of course one of the possible causes, but at this point there is no indication that this could be the cause,” Wedell said. (RELATED: Shocking video shows Marc Anthony's house in flames)

Firefighters are currently investigating the official cause of the fire, and on Friday morning, fire investigators were seen searching through the burned remains.
