Victim of fatal accident in Silver Creek Township identified

CASS COUNTY – Amanda Kay Huffman, 33, of Niles, has been identified as the victim of the fatal crash that occurred Thursday in Silver Creek Township, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Richard J. Behnke reports that officers were called to a one-car crash on Garrett Road north of M-62 Highway in Silver Creek Township around 11:57 a.m. Thursday.

Initial investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling south on Garrett Road. The vehicle crossed the center line and veered off the roadway to the east. The vehicle entered a ditch and overturned before coming to a stop in a field. Huffman was initially trapped under the vehicle. She was transported by SMCAS ambulance to Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The vehicle's passenger, George Lawrence Tovey III, was transported by SMCAS ambulance to Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital and declined medical treatment. Seat belts were not fastened at the time of the accident. Alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to have played a role in the accident.

Assisting us on site were the Pokagon Tribal Police Department, the Dowagiac Police Department, the Indian Lake Fire Department, the Indian Lake First Responders and the SMCAS Emergency Medical Services.

The crash remains under investigation.
