Trial of MPs accused in prison murder of Gershun Freeman could be split

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The case against nine Shelby County correctional officers charged in the 2022 death of inmate Gershun Freeman could be split into two cases.

The following correctional officers have been charged:

  • Stevon Jones: Second degree murder and aggravated assault resulting in death
  • Courtney Parham: Second degree murder and aggravated assault resulting in death
  • Damien Cooper: grievous bodily harm resulting in death
  • Ebonee Davis: serious bodily harm at a concert resulting in death
  • Lareko Elliott: serious bodily harm resulting in death
  • Anthony Howell: grievous bodily harm resulting in death
  • Chelsey Duckett: serious bodily harm resulting in death
  • Jeffrey Gibson: serious bodily harm at concert resulting in death
  • Charles Gatwood: grievous bodily harm resulting in death

Prosecutors filed a motion to split the trials based on the prison floor the suspects were on at the time of the incident.

A hearing on this motion is scheduled for September 20.

Freeman died in the Shelby County Jail on October 5, 2022. According to an autopsy, he suffered cardiac arrest while being restrained and his death was ruled a homicide.
