Florida man who hijacked ambulance, went for a joyride and then caused epic crash accepts deal

A Florida man has agreed to a settlement after his joyride in a stolen emergency vehicle was interrupted by an accident that sent police on a multi-day manhunt.

On Thursday, 36-year-old Gregory Brian McGall agreed to a deal that will put him behind bars for 25 years.

At a hearing in Hillsborough District Court, prosecutors said if the 26-year-old had not accepted the terms, he would have faced life in prison for his March 22 crimes in Tampa, Florida.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), emergency crews in a Chevy Tahoe from American Medical Response (AMR) were called to an accident around 2 a.m. on March 22.

Authorities said the driver, later identified as McGall, was driving a stolen pickup truck and caused an accident on the highway.

During the investigation, McGall allegedly jumped into the AMR vehicle and sped away.

Dashboard camera footage captured McGall behind the wheel of the stolen vehicle during a chase. Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) officers became aware of the theft and pursued before losing sight of the suspect.

During his reckless driving, McGall destroyed a laptop by folding it backwards and then throwing it out the window.

The joyride ended abruptly when McGall crashed in a fenced grassy field, authorities said.

The FHP said McGall ran away after the crash and authorities found the vehicle.

The search for the car thief continued until HCSO officers located McGall in a silver Nissan Altima on March 26. Authorities said the vehicle was driven by Jerry Skidmore, 42, who had an outstanding arrest warrant.

Police stopped the vehicle at a gas station and went inside to arrest McGall and Skidmore. Authorities said the two fugitives tried to flee but were immediately stopped.

Sheriff Chad Chronister praised the officers' work for successfully arresting the two men who were “wanted for serious crimes.”

“This operation is an example of the dedication and coordination of our special forces units,” said Chronister. “Thanks to their diligent efforts, we were able to arrest two individuals wanted for serious crimes and keep our community safe. I commend the Auto Theft Unit and everyone involved for their excellent work.”
