ISIS-affiliated prisoners kill four guards in Russian prison

In a maximum security prison in the Volgograd region, inmates posing as members of the terrorist group ISIS recently killed four Russian prison guards.

As Knewz.com has learned, footage of the incident shows the inmates waving ISIS flags while one of them shouted that they were “mujahideen” of the militant organization.

According to reports, on August 23, prisoners in the IK-19 penal colony took eight prison guards and four fellow inmates hostage.

Three prison guards were reportedly stabbed to death on site by ISIS-affiliated inmates, while a fourth later died in hospital from his injuries.

Footage shared by the attackers shows one of the prison guards lying in a pool of blood while another had his throat slit by one of the inmates.

According to the Russian prison service, three other prison guards were hospitalized with injuries as a result of the attack.

One of the ISIS attackers was reportedly seen wearing some sort of improvised explosive vest, while the others carried knives and hammers.

Footage of the incident has raised doubts about the security of the Russian prison, with authorities wondering how the attackers obtained the weapons and mobile phones to film the attack.

While the motive for the attack was unclear, the ISIS-linked detainees could be heard on the video claiming that Russia “oppresses Muslims all over the world” and that they had acted “mercilessly” in response to alleged mistreatment of Muslim prisoners in the country.

The inmates also expressed their solidarity with the suspects arrested in connection with the brutal terrorist attack on a concert hall in Moscow in March 2024, which left 145 people dead.

On March 22, ISIS terrorists opened fire on civilians attending a rock concert at Crocus City Hall near Moscow before setting the venue on fire.

The gunmen indiscriminately shot any civilian they could find as they reached the venue and smashed the glass doors at the entrance. As the terrified crowd tried to run for their lives, the terrorists made their way toward the 6,200-seat concert hall.

As the incidents at the maximum security prison were unfolding on Friday, August 23, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a statement announcing that he would discuss the matter with the Interior Minister, the head of security at Russia's domestic prison, and the head of the National Guard.

A few hours after this incident, Russian security services launched an operation aimed at neutralizing the IS-affiliated attackers and freeing the hostages.

The Russian National Guard said in a statement that its snipers had eliminated the prisoners who had caused chaos with “precise shots”.

“Snipers from the special forces of the Russian National Guard neutralized four prisoners in the Volgograd region who had been taken hostage by prison staff with four targeted shots. The hostages were released,” the National Guard was quoted as saying.

Andrey Bocharov, the regional governor of Volgograd, commented on the incident on social media, saying:

“Everyone on our territory is obliged to respect and obey the laws of Russia. We will not allow anyone to foment ethnic discord.”

It is worth noting that the Volgograd penal camp incident occurred several months after a significant prison uprising in June at a penal camp in the southern Rostov region that is associated with the militant group ISIS.

The June incident ended with Russian special forces gunning down six detainees responsible for the chaos.
