Paroled prisoner allegedly set fire to bushland in Barstow

The suspect is also being investigated in connection with four other arson attacks.

A parolee is suspected of arson after police say he set fire to tree limbs next to a Barstow business on Tuesday. Investigators are looking into whether he may be connected to four other fires that occurred recently.

According to Barstow police, witnesses reported a fire breaking out in vegetation next to a business in the 1500 block of Main Street shortly before 10 a.m.

The firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, the police said in a written statement. It was soon determined that the fire had been deliberately set.

“Officers spoke with numerous witnesses and were able to find evidence and some video surveillance footage of the incident,” the statement said. “Officers were able to positively identify Stewert Ibrahim, a 34-year-old transient from Barstow, as the arsonist.:

Ibrahim was found around 1:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of East Main Street and was taken into custody without resistance, officials said.

“The investigation is ongoing as officers are currently investigating four additional arsons that have occurred in the area over the past six days,” the statement said.

Ibrahim was arrested on charges of arson and violating probation from a previous conviction, county arrest records show. He was held without bail pending his first court appearance.
