Famous New York smash burgers at pop-up in Soho

One of New York's most sought-after burger joints is coming to London for the first time.

Since opening in summer 2021, 7th Street Burger has grown from a single location in the East Village to a full-fledged chain with 18 locations across New York and one in Washington DC.

From September 4-8, 7th Street is bringing its line-up of Smash Burgers to Soho for a four-day “exchange” at a pop-up at Truffle Burger; while 7th Street is on location in London, Truffle Burger is bringing its thicker, softer sandwiches to NYC.

7th Street Burger was relatively early in introducing the Smash Burger for the second time and received rave reviews from food critics across the US, with some declaring it the best in town.

It is known for its simplicity: the meatballs consist of 75% meat and 25% fat and are mashed on a grill plate, with only onions, cucumbers and American cheese. Brioche is out, potato rolls, which are also grilled, are in.

Since New York began its love affair with what some consider to be the burger in its purest form, London has also begun its own.

7th Street follows Honest Burgers, which focused on making burgers during lockdown, Danish Gasoline Grill, which is opening its own pop-up store in the Standard Hotel, and growing French brand Junk, which is flooding London with thinner patties.

7th Street founder Kevin Rezvani told the Standard: “Coming to the UK is a dream come true for the team. I love everything the London food scene stands for. It's a place we go to for inspiration and Soho is one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world.”

“We're taking over the grill at Truffle Burger and turning their place into a 7th Street, which is insane. We'd like to invite everyone to come along and tell us what they think… we'd love to do more in the UK in the future.”

Truffle founder Tom Bickers, meanwhile, said he wanted to bring the New York chain to London ever since he first tried it during a visit to the US.

“Not a week goes by without a new smash burger concept opening in London, so we're excited to invite 7th Street to shake things up and show London how it's done,” he said.

7th Street Burger is available from 4th to 8th September at Truffle Burger, 22 Bateman Street, W1D 3AN. truffle-london.com
