High school football game in South Carolina evacuated and canceled after incident

A high school football game in South Carolina was “suspended indefinitely” after an incident in the stands Friday night required an evacuation.

Stratford and Summerville played their season opener at Statford Stadium in Goose Creek, South Carolina.

Spectators at the game were asked to leave the stadium and go to their vehicles after the first half. Summerville led Stratford 28-14.

The game has been “suspended indefinitely.”

“The safety and well-being of our student-athletes, fans and community members is our top priority,” the Stratford football program said in a statement late Friday night.

Police told the South Carolina Post and Courier that a group of students reported a person with a weapon and the intention to use it.

Goose Creek police said in a statement that a 911 call indicated several shots were fired during the game, but ultimately no shots were fired.

“Nobody heard any gunshots. There are no shell casings. There's nothing there,” Goose Creek Police Chief LJ Roscoe told the Post and Courier. “We stopped the game to find out what happened and get to the bottom of this.”

Stratford plays at home against Daniel on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. (Eastern Time), while Summerville plays South Florence on Saturday, August 30.

This is an evolving story.
