Family mourns Cal Fire helicopter mechanic killed in tragic plane crash

A Cal Fire helicopter mechanic known as Thomias Smith, 60, tragically lost his life in a plane crash at Kneeland Airport last month. The loss is “devastating,” his family said.

The Northstate News spoke with Thomias' daughter, Serena Green, who said the loss has affected the family in many ways. One example is that he will no longer be able to take one of his children to their first day of school – something Green said her father had been looking forward to.

“My family will never be the same again,” Green said. “Every step he took, he acted; he moved with honor and [did] what was right… without thinking, no matter how hard it was, he did what he had to do. He was a role model for all of us growing up… my father's influence, aside from running this program and being irreplaceable for it, was that he was a mentor and he did everything with his heart and soul. Aviation was his life.”

Green said her father loved his role at Cal Fire and mentoring new hires. She said he was well-liked and respected by everyone at the agency.

Thomias' family has started a GoFundMe campaign to support the family during this difficult time. “My mom is struggling financially right now and if I could raise awareness of this GoFundMe campaign so my mom and the boys can pay the mortgage, it would be immensely appreciated,” said Green.
