Shocking meth crime details revealed: NY mother who caused wrong-way crash with suspended license that killed her 9-year-old son is being held on $1 million bail

The Long Island mother accused in the wrong-way crash that killed her 9-year-old son admitted to using methamphetamine and driving without a license before the horrific incident, prosecutors said Friday – while being held on $1 million bail.

Kerri Bedrick, 32, was wheeled into a Suffolk County courtroom in a wheelchair, dressed in a blue hospital gown and with her hands cuffed behind her back, to attend an emotional arraignment that revealed shocking new details about the tragic car crash.

In Bedrick's SUV, police found over four grams of pills that tested positive for meth. According to a criminal complaint, she admitted to taking the drug before driving with her son, Eli D. Henrys, in the back seat.

“She also admitted that she had taken methamphetamine at 8 p.m. the night before she left,” said Assistant District Attorney Laura Newcombe.

A drug-addicted Bedrick attempted to flee from a deputy sheriff early Thursday with her son in tow, police and prosecutors said.

She was driving the wrong way on the South State Parkway and caused a four-vehicle accident in which her child was ultimately killed, it was said.

According to court documents, police found Bedrick standing in front of the driver's door of the car with watery eyes and slurring her words.

“I honestly don't know,” she told officers when asked where she was going, according to the documents.

When asked if she had taken any drugs that evening, she replied, “These are my prescriptions in my purse, it's Ziram and methamphetamine,” court documents state. Ziram is a drug used to treat high blood pressure.

When asked when she last took the medication, Bedrick replied, “I don't remember if it was yesterday or today,” the file states.

Here's everything we know about a mother's wrong-way driving accident on Long Island that left her son dead

  • Kerri A. Bedrick, a 32-year-old Long Island mother, has been charged in connection with a horrific wrong-way driving crash that left her 9-year-old son dead and several others injured, authorities said early Thursday.
  • Bedrick ignored a Suffolk County sheriff's deputy's attempt to stop her and accelerated just moments before the horrific collision of all four vehicles that killed her infant son, Eli Henrys.
  • The mother appeared to walk unsteadily as officers led her into a waiting patrol car later that evening. She reportedly admitted to using methamphetamine and driving without a license prior to the horrific incident.
  • Bedrick had had her license revoked a whopping 56 times in the past, and she had already been convicted of drunk driving in 2012.
  • Diane Bedrick, Kerri Bedrick's mother, said her daughter had been battling health problems before the tragedy.

In addition, her driver's license had already been revoked 56 times during her fatal drive, Newcombe said.

Newcombe said Bedrick had previously been convicted of drunk driving in 2012.

Bedrick, of Centerport, was reportedly observed driving a 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SUV on the wrong side of the Southern State Parkway near Exit 42 in Islip around 2:15 a.m.

She sped past a Suffolk County sheriff's deputy who tried to stop her and accelerated just moments before colliding with another car, causing a four-vehicle pileup, state police said.

The drivers of two other vehicles involved in the pile-up – 29-year-old Haydee Meyer and 24-year-old David Picard – were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“By the grace of God, David is doing better,” Picard’s father told The Post on Friday.

During Friday's hearing, prosecutors said they would charge Bedrick with murder.

She is currently facing charges of driving while intoxicated with a child under 16, driving without a license, illegal possession of a stimulant, operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs and endangering the welfare of a child.

Bedrick's lawyer, Eleanor Gery, portrayed the troubled mother as a victim of domestic violence at the hands of Eli's father, who had spent years in prison for beating her.

She said Bedrick also suffered from a range of health problems, from epilepsy to narcolepsy to spina bifida.

The lawyer argued for a lower bail because Bedrick was receiving medical treatment in Manhattan and wanted to attend her son's funeral.

“My client has just suffered a loss, the worst loss a parent can suffer,” he told the court.

Judge Eric Sachs said this was “one of the most tragic cases I have been involved in in my 39 years as a judge” and set an astronomical bail for Bedrick, whose next court date is Aug. 27.
