Man dies in Boone County Jail after being handcuffed; Highway Patrol investigates

The Boone County Sheriff's Office said a man died in the Boone County Jail on Friday.

The sheriff's office announced in a press release that Ashland police arrested 43-year-old William Joseph Gipson of Ashland on Friday.

At 3:09 p.m. they took Gipson to the Boone County Jail.

The sheriff's office press release states that Gipson did not cooperate with jail staff during the booking process and was physically restrained.

The press release did not specify how or for how long Gipson was detained.

The press release also states that at 6:34 p.m., while Gipson was handcuffed, a prison guard noticed that he was showing signs of health problems.

Boone County Jail staff then began providing medical assistance.

Gipson became unresponsive. Prison staff and medical personnel performed CPR, but Gipson died.
