Famous baseball stadium from “A League of Their Own” destroyed by major fire

A popular baseball field in Ontario, California, burned down late Thursday night, destroying the famous setting for films such as “A League of Their Own” and “Eight Men Out.”

Jay Littleton Ballpark has a history spanning nearly 80 years. It was home to the Ontario Orioles professional team in the 1947 season, and now hosts a Little League team. According to Deadline, it was declared a historic landmark in 2003.

“This ballpark was the heart of Ontario. It's a historic ballpark, a place for our kids to play,” Aaron Matthiesen, president of the Ontario Eastern Little League, told ABC 7.

The stadium rose to prominence when it appeared in the Penny Marshall-directed blockbuster “A League of Their Own”, starring Rosie O'Donnell, Tom Hanks and Geena Davis, and served as the backdrop for the film.

The fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. and firefighters were able to put out the blaze, but the wooden bleachers and dugout were destroyed. According to ABC 7, police are investigating the fire at Jay Littleton Ball Park as a possible arson attack.

According to Key News Network, the fire had already engulfed the park by the time emergency crews arrived. No injuries were reported in the after-hours fire. According to the New York Post, investigators were combing through the rubble on Friday morning.
