The death of Anthony Johnson Jr. in Tarrant County Jail was ruled a homicide by asphyxiation

A Tarrant County coroner has ruled the death of prison inmate Anthony Johnson Jr. a homicide, potentially leading to charges.

According to the autopsy report, the cause of death was asphyxiation due to the use of force and pepper spray.

Johnson, 31, died April 21 in the Tarrant County Jail after being arrested during what his family said was a schizophrenic episode. During a cell check, he resisted guards and was pepper-sprayed before being handcuffed and improperly restrained on the ground with a jailer's knee on his back, according to partial video of the altercation released by the Sheriff's Office.

Two prison employees were fired but later reinstated and placed on leave.

Amid mounting pressure to release information about Johnson's death, the sheriff's office and Texas Rangers released video of the incident in May. The footage shows what happened until prison guards dismounted from Johnson's motionless body.

Johnson's family has called for the full video to be released and has repeatedly criticized county commissioners for what they see as a lack of transparency at the prison.

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
