Latest knife attack in Solingen: 15-year-old boy arrested, manhunt for three dead in Germany continues

Three dead and eight injured after knife attack at festival in Germany

A 15-year-old boy was arrested by German police after three people were killed in a stabbing at a diversity festival – but the perpetrator is still at large.

A large-scale manhunt was launched last night for the perpetrator who began attacking people shortly after 9.30pm on Friday as thousands gathered in the central square in Solingen, western Germany, for a celebration to mark the city's 650th anniversary.th Anniversary.

The arrested 15-year-old was observed talking to the perpetrator shortly before the attack, police said at a press conference this afternoon.

The police are questioning the teenager while the search for the perpetrator – presumably a man – continues.

A terrorist motive has not yet been ruled out. The police said there was no other obvious motive for the attack. Anti-terror commissioner Markus Caspers said investigations into the motive were still ongoing, but the “overall circumstances” showed that terrorism “cannot be ruled out.”

The three dead were a 67-year-old man, a 56-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman. Eight people were injured, including four “very seriously”.

“The police are currently conducting a large-scale manhunt for the perpetrator,” said a police statement on Saturday morning.

They have assembled a large contingent of forces around Solingen city centre, including special units.

“Both victims and witnesses are currently being questioned,” they added.

The festival of diversity began on Friday and was scheduled to run until Sunday. Several stages in the main streets offered live music, cabaret and acrobatics. The authorities cancelled the rest of the event over the weekend.

Perpetrator is still on the run despite arrest of 15-year-old

The police assume that the perpetrator is still at large and that the arrested 15-year-old is not suspected of being behind the attack.

Two witnesses told police that shortly before the stabbing they had overheard a conversation between the 15-year-old and the alleged perpetrator about the crime.

What they had heard only became clear to the witnesses after the attack.

The teenager was arrested in connection with the stabbings, but he is not accused of being the perpetrator – he is only accused of knowing about it.

According to the police, the perpetrator is still on the run.
