A court in Sylhet sent former Supreme Court judge AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik to jail on Saturday.

According to judicial inspector Jamshed Alam, Judge Alamgir Hossain of the Sylhet Judicial Magistrate Court-1 issued the order after the police produced Manik under Section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Witnesses reported that a crowd pelted the former judge with eggs and shoes as he was brought to court and that some people attempted to physically attack him. However, police ensured his safety by escorting him under heavy guard.

Manik was arrested by the Bangladesh Border Guard on Friday evening while allegedly trying to enter India through the Dana border in Kanaighat upazila of Sylhet. He was handed over to Kanaighat police station early Saturday.

According to police, charges were filed against Manik in Dhaka.

Manik served in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court and retired on October 1, 2015. His post-retirement activities, including delivering judgements after his retirement and making controversial remarks on television, among others, have drawn criticism.
