Police investigate attack on Muslim woman in Brooklyn as hate crime

The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 21, at around 8:42 p.m.

An unknown man approached the woman and struck her multiple times while making anti-Islamic comments. The suspect then fled west on Atlantic Avenue.

The victim suffered minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.

The suspect is described as a male, between the ages of 16 and 20, with a heavy build and dark skin. He was last seen wearing a black mask, black hoodie, black pants, white sneakers and carrying a book bag.

In another case, a woman was charged with a hate crime after she allegedly pepper-sprayed her Muslim Uber driver. The woman allegedly sprayed the driver after he began praying in Arabic at an intersection. When the woman's friend asked why she attacked the driver, she allegedly replied, “He's brown.”

“These disturbing crimes demonstrate the real danger that anti-Islamic fanaticism poses to members of our community,” said Afaf Nasher, executive director of CAIR-NY.
