Lakers star Anthony Davis joins Floyd Mayweather's entourage for upcoming fight

Floyd Mayweather is no stranger to the spotlight, having spent more than a decade as boxing's biggest draw. Over the course of his career, Mayweather has garnered approximately 24 million pay-per-view buys and $1.67 billion in revenue.

The charismatic boxer, bordering on arrogance, is one of the most polarizing athletes of all time. Boxing fans love him, others despise him, but PPV numbers suggest that everyone tunes in when Floyd “Money” Mayweather fights.

In 2017, Mayweather retired from boxing with a record of 50-0, which puts him in serious consideration as the greatest boxer of all time. Although he is no longer a professional, Mayweather still competes in exhibition fights that bring in huge winnings. Notable exhibition opponents who have faced Mayweather include YouTuber and WWE superstar Logan Paul and former UFC champion Connor McGregor.

On Saturday, Mayweather will take part in an exhibition rematch with John Gotti III, whom he previously fought in June 2023. That fight was ruled void in the sixth round after both sides refused to stop hurling abuse at each other. That decision prompted Gotti III to attack Mayweather, leading to a brawl in the ring – a disappointing ending for the spectators who paid to see the two face off.

In their rematch in Mexico City, Mayweather will be paired with gold medalists from the U.S. basketball team Anthony Davis and Anthony Edwards, members of the U.S. basketball team who have received impressive media attention following their participation in the Paris Olympics.

There's a trend going around the internet recently where professional athletes share the stage with famous artists during their concerts. Recently, country music star Luke Bryan made headlines when he was accompanied by quarterback CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans at his show in Texas.

Mayweather is bringing this trend to the boxing ring along with NBA superstars Davis and Edwards, whose overall popularity has increased following their successful fight for gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

As for the fight, despite the outcome of their first encounter, it was clear that Mayweather was still the far superior fighter, even at age 47, as he outboxed Gotti III for most of the fight. This fight will certainly keep America on its toes, as legendary boxer Mayweather takes on the grandson of one of the most notorious mob bosses in history.

The fight on Saturday, August 24th, will air on DAZN at 4:30 p.m. PT/7:30 p.m. ET
