Murder charge against alleged mall shooter

DOTHAN, Alabama (WTVY) – Jurors returned indictments Friday against a murder suspect who police suspect fired terrorizing shots at a Dothan mall.

Keith Shakur Helms is the suspected shooter of 21-year-old Alfonso Morrissette, who died in a shooting at an apartment complex in Dothan in December 2022.

Officials said Helms tried to kill Morrissette at the Alexander Court Homes the night before, but his shots missed.

This is not the first time police believe Helms has been involved in violent shootings.

Investigators say he was also one of several who shot at each other at the Wiregrass Commons Mall a few months earlier, briefly shutting down the mall.

Helms has been in the Houston County Jail since his arrest by federal marshals last year and is being held by authorities on $1.5 million bail.

The date for his trial on murder charges is tentatively set for November.
