Murder suspect on probation rapes 15-year-old girl in Maharashtra: Police

Mumbai:

A murder defendant released on parole is accused of raping a 15-year-old girl in the town of Sangli in the state of Maharashtra, police said on Saturday.

The accused, Sanjay Prakash Mane (34), was arrested in the morning, an official said.

Mane was charged in a 2011 murder case and was released on parole two months ago, he said.

The girl had left the house to go shopping at around 9.30pm on Friday when the accused attacked her, forcibly took her into his house and raped her, the officer said.

The girl informed her mother about the attack on Saturday, whereupon a complaint was filed and the accused was arrested within two hours, he said.

Mane also allegedly sexually harassed the girl last month, the official said.

The accused has been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, he said.
