30-year-old Stowe man dies in shooting on Church Street in Burlington

Surgeon General declares gun violence a public health problem

In an online address, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said gun violence in the United States requires a public health approach.

A 30-year-old Stowe man was shot and killed on Church Street shortly after midnight Saturday.

Teville Williams was shot multiple times after what police say was an altercation with 22-year-old Aaliyah Johnson. Police have arrested Johnson. Police say there is no threat to the public and have seized a .45-caliber handgun believed to have been used in the shooting.

The Burington Police Community Service Officer heard the gunshots while walking in City Hall Park and immediately responded. Officers responded and found Williams.

“They immediately began CPR. An off-duty officer nearby also assisted. At the same time, another officer approached the scene and detained a female suspect,” police said. The victim was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center and pronounced dead.

“Officers attempting to render medical aid to the victim were hampered by a large crowd that surrounded the officers,” a news report said. “This crowd had to be pushed back to secure the scene, where shell casings, bullets and blood evidence were visible.”

Police said their preliminary investigation revealed that Williams and Johnson had an altercation at Red Square, a bar in the Church Street Marketplace. Williams allegedly attacked Johnson, the police statement said.

“Bar staff asked both parties to exit the establishment through separate doors. Ms. Johnson exited through one door and went to the other to confront Mr. Williams on Church Street. She then allegedly shot him several times,” police said.

The shooting occurred at 12:28 a.m. on Saturday, August 24. Burlington Police are asking anyone with witnesses or information to contact them at 802-658-2704.

Is this related to other gun incidents in Burlington?

On Friday, Burlington police asked the public for help and sought information “regarding several violent crimes that have occurred in downtown Burlington over the past two weeks.”

“These crimes are linked to large groups of suspects and perpetrators, some of whom have been identified as juveniles,” the press release states. “Many of the individuals involved were known to be carrying firearms, and the August 11 shooting at A_Dog Skatepark, in which a New York juvenile was shot in the torso, is linked to these acts of violence.”
