Warhammer 40K: Blood Angels Army Box – Lemartes, Astorath and The Death Company in a mini spotlight

We have the miniatures from the Blood Angels Army Box in the studio and up close. Let's see what's new with the Sons of Sanguinius!

Games Workshop is releasing the new Blood Angels Army Box this weekend. Good luck trying to get your hands on one. We got one in the studio courtesy of GW. Unfortunately for me…someone else have already claimed it. So yes, I am indeed in the same boat as everyone else with this release. I am joining the queue with all the other Blood Angel players out there hoping to get my own copy. I have a feeling it's going to be a bloodbath (for our wallets).

Okay, okay, enough with the gloom about supply chain and availability. What I do know is that Astorath and Lemartes will be available individually at some point in the future. And the standard edition of the codex will be available as well. But if you're like me, you're curious to see what these miniatures look like up close. So let's take a look!

Astorath the Grim

Astorath is back with his new miniature. For him, this is clearly just an update/homage to the previous miniature.

Similar to the other Blood Angels characters that have been updated, they are still themselves… just Primaris. I have to say that I like this new version more than the previous one. It is a bit more dynamic as the upper body is slightly tilted. It still has all the details of the previous version. Astorath is just larger. Also, the new Mini has dropped the squiggles and nipples. So… maybe not ALL the details are the same.

Lemartes, Guardian of the Lost

Another update to a classic. There are a few things about this miniature that I'm not 100% sure I like. Personally, I don't really like the update to his helmet now. Why does he have a ball in his mouth? Is he a rabid dog playing fetch? I mean, maybe… he's in the clutches of the black fury after all. In that respect, I like the old miniature's helmet better.

This new one is also all hunched over in a “come here, bro!” pose. Which… I get it. He's a little aggressive, which makes sense. I feel like I'm in the minority, as I like the Primaris update for the jump packs out there. I also like his updated weapons and wargear. I don't entirely agree with his chest piece that looks like a ribcage – but I get it. Just to be clear, I'm not a total hater of this miniature. But I'm not totally for this new one either. I'm more of a “take it or leave it, whatever” kind of person. But this is the internet and you have to be either a 1 or a 10 about things. There's no room for nuance anymore.

Upgrades for the Death Company

I'm pretty sure Goatboy was the one who put these together and he went with a few more Death Company options to show off. The upgrades work with pretty much all Primaris Space Marines Intercessors kits. There's loads of extra stuff you can add to your guys. I also love the extra heads you can swap out for your Blood Angels.

There are certainly some “space vampire” heads in this box for everyone, but with the various vials, wargear and shoulder pad upgrades, you can outfit the minis in the box however you like. You can also spread the love to other Primaris squads if you want to do that instead.

The new box set is available for pre-order starting today. Good luck getting your own copy. See you there.

Just like a space vampire, this box is a mixed bag. But I think overall there is a lot more good than bad!
