Famous Newcastle cocktail bar up for sale for £1.5m years after it closed

Around 20 years ago it was one of the best places in town to enjoy a cocktail and now the building that once housed the Pravda bar could be yours for a whopping £1.5 million.

At the same time, the Aveika restaurant was still firmly rooted in its Chase era, Sambuca was Casa and places like Sea, Quilted Camel and Bar 38 were attracting hordes of revellers most nights of the week. Pravda was a stop for many people on their evenings on the Quayside, usually before a trip over the Swing Bridge to end up on The Boat or at Buffalo Joes and Baja Beach Club.

Pravda was known for its fairly strong and usually very affordable cocktail mixes, whether served individually or in a jug, and the once thriving establishment was known for its midweek drinks deals. But like its old Quayside neighbours, Pravda's last orders were called years ago and it has sadly sat empty ever since.

And now it's appeared on a number of property sites online, with offers in excess of £1.5 million for the 650sq m, three-storey building, which still has the Pravda sign on the outside as a lasting reminder of its former glory days. The former bar's location is quite desirable, as it's right next to the Innside by Melia hotel and Gino's Restaurant, and right next to the Copthorne and haunts such as the Quayside Bar, more recent favourite The Dubliner, Tiger Hornsby and the Michelin-starred and award-winning House of Tides.

Newcastle City Council has assessed the site as suitable for mixed use. A description on the Sanderson Young website states: “We therefore consider that a wide range of development types should be acceptable for the site, including leisure, hotel, residential, retail, commercial and other unique uses, subject to statutory planning permission. The site offers a unique opportunity for developers to deliver a high quality and attractive scheme in Newcastle's popular Quayside area.”
