PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A woman and a girl were killed and two people are in critical condition Saturday morning after a fire broke out in a row house in Northeast Philadelphia, according to the Philadelphia Fire Department.

At around 7:30 a.m., firefighters were called to the 900 block of Granite Street, off Summerdale Avenue, and found thick smoke coming from the second floor of a home. According to Philadelphia police, six people were inside the home at the time.

According to police, an eight-year-old girl and a 31-year-old woman were pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene of the accident.

In addition, three people were injured, two of whom were taken to hospitals. One of them was a 9-year-old boy with burns on his arms, legs and back; he was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in critical condition.

A 32-year-old man with burns to his face and back was taken to Temple University Hospital. A 28-year-old man also had a burn on his hand.

Another man fled the scene and police are working to determine his identity.

Paramedics treated the injuries of two people and took them to a hospital in serious condition, a department spokesman said.

After the fire broke out, an emergency order was issued and around 60 firefighters were on site to extinguish the fire, a fire department spokesman said.

The Philadelphia Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
