Minecraft's new Breach enchantment is a clear argument for an armor overhaul

Key findings

  • In the latest Tricky Trials update for Minecraft, players received new items, mobs, structures, and weapons to explore their worlds.
  • Introduced in Tricky Trials, the mace offers exclusive enchantments such as the rare Break enchantment, although few mobs wear armor.
  • Suggestions for a possible armor overhaul in Minecraft could include increasing the chance of armor spawning on mobs and adding armor for different enemy mobs.

In MinecraftThe recent update 1.21, also known as Tricky Trials, introduced several new items, mobs, structures, and weapons. From the titular Court Chambers to the mighty Mace, Tricky Trials offered players new and interesting ways to Minecraft Worlds. With the addition of the mace came new exclusive enchantments for the blunt weapon, including the rare Break enchantment, which reduces the armor effectiveness of enemy mobs. Despite the rarity of this enchantment, very few mobs wear armor, but Mojang may fix this bug with a potential armor rework for mobs.

Minecraft's Armored Mobs Explained

For Minecraft Players who exclusively play PVP modes, or only in peaceful or creative modes, may be surprised to learn that some mobs can spawn or equip armor pieces. Zombies, zombie villagers, skeletons, husks, walkers, and piglins will occasionally spawn with various armor sets, ranging from a single piece like a helmet to a full diamond armor set on rare occasions. These mobs' armor may also be enchanted to provide stronger defense, and they may also wear the uncraftable chain armor. While these mobs wear armor, they are not guaranteed to drop their armor when killed, and they rarely drop armor, usually in a weakened state.

While these are the only mobs that can spawn with armor, there are also other Minecraft Mobs can pick up and equip armor when they walk over a drop piece or receive a piece via a dispenser. These mobs include the Drowned, Zombified Piglins, Piglin Brutes, and Wither Skeletons. These are often rare sights unless players die with armor near these mobs or when mobs pick up armor from nearby explosions that destroy chests. Some of these mobs, such as the Zombified Piglins and Wither Skeletons, can only pick up and equip armor on Normal and Hard difficulties.

Non-hostile mobs wearing armor in Minecraft

Not every mob in Minecraft that wears armor is hostile. Once players have tamed a horse or wolf, both species can be equipped with different armor. Players can equip the horse with armor made of leather, gold, iron, and diamond. Most horse armor can only be found in chests around the world, with the exception of leather horse armor, which can be crafted or purchased from villagers. Likewise, wolf armor can be crafted from armadillo hides that are dropped or stalked by armadillos in wasteland and savanna biomes. Untamed or hostile wolves, as well as donkeys, mules, skeleton horses, and zombie horses, cannot wear armor.

Skeletons and zombies occasionally drop their chain armor when killed, making these mobs a renewable source of chain armor beyond acquiring the armor from chests or trading with villagers.

A possible rework of Minecraft armor

Since armored enemy mobs rarely appear, MinecraftMost players will likely avoid using the Rupture enchantment and instead use the more unique Density and Windblast enchantments on the mace. To fix this issue, Mojang could increase the percentage chance of armor spawning on hostile mobs. They could additionally make armor for other hostile mobs such as Hoglins, Spiders, Spider Jockeys, and Wither Skeletons. Due to their small size, Spiders could only spawn with chainmail or leather armor. Hoglins could spawn with gold armor similar to horse armor, while Wither Skeletons could spawn with gold and possibly netherite armor to make them more of a challenge.

Mojang could also have Illager spawn with different types of armor. Illager already use a wide variety of weapons, so wearing leather or chain armor could make them even more dangerous to others, giving the Break enchantment more utility. Mojang could also have Illager spawn with tamed Armored Wolves and Ravagers to make Illager raids and outposts harder to defeat and conquer. If armor add-ons like these are to MinecraftThe Break enchantment for the mace could become one of the more useful and sought after enchantments in the game.
