After watching the fourth season of The Umbrella Academy, I like how it seems to reference Kill Bill, Ferris Bueller and other famous films

As a big fan of The Umbrella Academy on Netflix, I'm so sad that the series ended after four seasons. Showrunner Steve Blackman did a great job of staying true to the comics, but he also had fun throwing in surprises for fans. And after binge-watching the fourth and final season, which hit the market earlier this month, TV schedule 2024I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the show seemed to reference some very well-known, famous movie scenes.

The Umbrella Academy is no stranger to mimicking pop culture. I mean, the entire second season is set in the 1960s and revolves around the assassination of JFK and the conspiracies that followed. Meanwhile, the hotel scenes of the third season were strongly reminiscent of The Shining – The Wonderful World of Madness. In a current segment for TudumBlackman discussed a number of hidden callbacks from the past umbrella Seasons they smuggled into the last part of the show, saying:

We really love incorporating Easter eggs into the show.

Without further ado, here are four famous films that Umbrella Academy apparently mentioned in season 4, including Kill Bill And Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

The scene in Little Miss Sunshine's van

Right at the start, we see our first possible, albeit unconfirmed, reference in Episode 2, titled “Jean and Gene.” Although we don’t see the two aforementioned married villains until the very last minute of the episode, we do see a scene that reminds us very much of Little Miss Sunshine.

In both the popular film and this science fiction comic series, the driver of the packed three-row van, full of dysfunctional family members, is asked to stop. But in The Umbrella AcademyIt's not because anyone is having a panic attack, it's because all the passengers have been given marigolds against their will and are feeling pretty sick.

The trench coat scene from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”

In one of the best movies of the '80s, Ferris Bueller gets away with some pretty incredible things on his “day off” from school, including sneaking his girlfriend away right under the principal's nose. In the scene, Sloane and Principal Rooney are waiting outside when a bus drives off and Ferris is standing across the street, disguised in a trench coat.

It is very similar in The Umbrella Academy In the episode “End of the Beginning,” a bus drives by and Diego and Luther are standing on the sidewalk wearing trench coats. A coincidence in clothing? I don't think so!

The grave scene from Kill Bill Vol. 2

This is actually confirmed by the dialogue itself, so there's no guessing here! In episode 5, Klaus is buried alive in a pet cemetery (oh Klaus!), and after trying every other option, he decides to channel his inner Uma Thurman to escape the grave.

Our favorite eccentric medium has a lighter instead of a flashlight, but otherwise the scenes are exactly the same, with Klaus raising his hand and hitting the wood Black Mamba style. As Kill Bill Fan, I absolutely loved this direct reference!

Elevator scene in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”

Every Marvel fan knows the famous elevator scene from Winter Soldier in which Captain America, with his hands tied, beats up an elevator full of SHIELD henchmen.

The Umbrella Academy seemingly recreated this scene where Luther similarly becomes a threat to the underground organization that has infiltrated the CIA, and they send a group of men into the elevator to take him out. But in true Steve Rogers fashion, the elevator opens and everyone is lying unconscious on the floor with Luther standing over them. As Captain America Fan, I recognized that immediately. Cult!

I really enjoyed finding these unofficial references, as well as the intentional Easter eggs that the crew hid, especially in the last scene with all the old characters. Although I might have to rewatch it to see them all. I might even rewatch the whole series to discover all the Bennifer Easter eggs, and no, I don't mean the tumultuous celebrity relationship. My Brellies know what I'm talking about.
