Carlos Alcaraz ended his practice early on Saturday after spraining his right ankle, but told reporters he was fine as the US Open fast approaches.

“I think it's OK. I just stopped my training as a precaution,” Alcaraz said, according to the Associated Press. “I didn't feel well enough to continue training, just in case things got worse.”

As the AP noted, Alcaraz didn't seem to be worried about missing the U.S. Open, but the bigger problem was having to stop practicing.

“I don't want to stop training. I want to train, I want to get better, I want to prepare for the tournament,” he said, adding: “I'm sure that tomorrow or in two days I will definitely be back at 100%.”

Alcaraz, the No. 3 seed at the US Open, is scheduled to face qualifier Li Tu in the first round on Tuesday night.

It's understandable why Alcaraz would want to practice, especially after his tough loss to Gael Monfils in the round of 32 at the Cincinnati Open on August 15. Alcaraz called it “the worst match I've ever played in my career” and smashed his racket in anger.

For Alcaraz, however, it was a great year, culminating in victories at the French Open and Wimbledon, which gave him four Grand Slam titles in his career. He also won silver at the Summer Olympics in Paris, where he lost in the final to Novak Djokovic.

Alcaraz is now hoping for his second US Open title. He won his first in 2022 when he defeated Casper Ruud in four sets to celebrate his first ever major victory.
