Wellsville community participates in motorcycle race to fight ALS

An event in Wellsville was intended to bring the community together in the fight against ALS.

Motorcycles and vintage cars thundered down the streets on Saturday afternoon to honor the life of one local and make life easier for another.

“Jon got ALS and it lasted quite a long time – about two years,” said organizer Mark Stewart. “We wanted to organize some kind of event in his memory. My younger brother and I both ride motorcycles, so we came up with this poker run. Last year we sponsored a cancer patient. This year we found someone with ALS who really needs help. She's young and just needs some help.”

This year's honoree, Jessica Blinn of Wellsville, is a mother of two children whose cause has been taken up by the biker community. Jessica's family members were present at the event and were shocked by the outpouring of support for their beloved son.

“This really means a lot to me,” said Melonie Snyder. “Jess is in a wheelchair now and has a four-year-old and an eight-year-old. Her sister is her caregiver and takes care of them. I had no idea how much time and money bikers put into these causes. It's just a blessing, really.”

Organizers hope to continue the event next year while also serving to educate the public about ALS.

“A lot of people don't know about ALS, so we try to raise awareness. This community and all the small towns in the area really support any benefit. It's a great community,” said Terry Stewart.

Next year, the event will expand to include a Facebook page to attract more participants and further support the fight against ALS.
