Police officer attacked during vehicle inspection, accused arrested

Sunny, a 30-year-old resident of Phagwara, was arrested for assaulting a policeman and tearing his uniform during a vehicle check. Charges have been filed.

A 30-year-old resident of Phagwara was arrested on Friday evening for allegedly assaulting a policeman after the policeman asked him to show his vehicle registration documents during a special check, police said on Saturday.

A case has been registered against the accused under sections 221 (obstructing a public servant in discharge of his duties) and 132 (assault or use of force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duties) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita. (HT file)

The accused was identified as Sunny.

“A police team asked Sunny to show his vehicle documents during a special vehicle check, but he became angry and attacked a policeman. During the scuffle, the policeman's uniform was also torn off,” said Rupinder Kaur Bhatti, Phagwara police commissioner.

The injured policeman was taken to a hospital for treatment following the incident, which occurred in Prempura near Shivpur Road.

Proceedings have been registered against the accused under Sections 221 (obstructing a public servant in discharge of his public duties) and 132 (assault or force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duties) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.
