Calcutta doctor rape case: Accused Sanjay Roy told THIS to jail guards after confessing to the crime

The lie detector test of Sanjay Roy, one of the main accused in a case, has been postponed due to technical reasons. However, the Central Investigation Agency plans to reschedule it to another date.

The test, which was also attended by former director of RG Kar Hospital Sandip Ghosh and five others, including interns, doctors and a person associated with Roy, faced delays due to these technical glitches.

As reported by PTICiting officials, the test on Roy could be conducted on Sunday at the Presidency Correctional Home, where he is currently lodged.

Meanwhile, Roy claimed to prison guards that he knew nothing about the rape and murder, according to sources familiar with the matter.

However, the Hindustan Times, citing sources, reported that Roy may be trying to mislead the investigation as he has not given a satisfactory explanation for his facial injuries or his presence at the crime scene.

Sanjay Roy will remain in custody under the supervision of the CBI until September 6, 2024.

Surveillance footage and a Bluetooth device found near the paramedic's body led to the arrest of Roy, who was seen entering the college's seminar room where the body was found.

Roy, a 33-year-old volunteer with the Kolkata Police since 2019, is said to have been married multiple times and is considered a “womanizer”. A trained boxer, he won the favour of several senior police officials over the years, which earned him a job at the police outpost of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The CBI told the Supreme Court on Thursday that there were attempts to cover up the rape and murder of the doctor, saying that local police altered the crime scene before the federal agency took over the investigation.

Earlier on Saturday, the CBI had launched a probe into alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College, taking over the case from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the West Bengal government following the directions of the Calcutta High Court. The court has directed the CBI to submit a progress report on the probe within three weeks.

The move came after the hospital's former deputy director Akhtar Ali raised concerns about financial malpractice during the tenure of former director Sandip Ghosh. Ali had sought a central agency inquiry into these alleged irregularities, following which the Supreme Court directed the CBI to take over the case.

The tragic death of the junior doctor, whose body was found with severe injuries in a seminar room on August 9, sparked widespread protests. Roy was arrested the following day and on August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation from the Calcutta Police to the CBI, which began its investigation on August 14.
