Hendersonville's Josh Berry could have been in contention for his first career NASCAR Cup Series victory with a lap and a half to go, but his race Saturday at Daytona International Speedway ended when his car slid on its roof.

Berry and Austin Cindric collided on the backstretch while battling for the lead toward the end of the Coke Zero Sugar 400, and Berry rolled once. The car landed on its roof, hit the inside wall headfirst, and then spun like a top until it came to a stop.

Berry's car was put back on its tires shortly after the accident and he climbed out of his No. 4 Ford under his own power, giving the crowd a thumbs up.

“It probably wasn't as bad as it looked,” Berry told NBC after he was examined and released from the Infield Care Center.

Up to this point, Berry had ridden well, winning the first stage and showing good speed in the head-to-head race, applying pressure and moving forward.
