Former couple dead after murder-suicide in northwest Miami-Dade home; children in home at time of shooting, police say – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

DORAL, FLA. (WSVN) – Police searched a home in northwest Miami-Dade after a former couple died in a subsequent murder while their children were inside the house.

Miami-Dade Police units arrived at the scene of the shooting near the corner of West Randall Park Drive and Northwest 124th Terrace on Saturday morning.

Neighbor Armando Hernandez said he heard six or seven shots.

“It sounded like lightning and was so close that I thought, 'Wow,'” he said.

According to a police report, a 39-year-old woman was shot in her home by her ex. The 40-year-old later shot himself.

Police said the murder-suicide occurred while the children, aged between 9 and 15, were in the house.

“They had been separated for several months and this man did not live in this house,” said Miami-Dade Police Detective Andre D. Martin. “One of the children of the two deceased was taken to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital as a precautionary measure.”

Investigators did not say whether the couple was married or simply in a relationship.

While detectives investigated the domestic shooting, they cordoned off the area with yellow tape for hours.

Neighbors who know the family were saddened to hear of the tragedy.

“They seemed like nice people, I never would have guessed that,” Hernandez said. “The sad thing is that most of the time they don't turn against intruders or trespassers, they turn against the family.”

The child who was taken to the hospital was later discharged, is back home and doing well.
