Motorcyclist killed, passenger seriously injured in accident in Mission Valley

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man was killed and a woman was critically injured in a collision between a motorcycle and a car Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The accident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Camino Del Rio North and Ward Road. According to San Diego Police, a 60-year-old man was driving his 2015 Subaru Outback eastbound on Camino Del Rio North in the number two lane. At the same time, a 59-year-old man was driving his 2021 BMW G310 motorcycle with a 55-year-old female passenger eastbound in the number one lane.

According to police, the driver of the Subaru attempted to make an illegal U-turn on the simulated median of an island directly in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle then collided with the driver's side of the Subaru.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The passenger on the motorcycle suffered a broken pelvis, a broken leg and a collapsed lung. Her injuries are considered life-threatening.

Authorities confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

Officers from the San Diego Police Department's Traffic Division are in charge of the investigation and expect to remain on scene for several hours.
