Race leader Michael McDowell retired after second serious accident in Daytona

The second major accident Saturday night occurred eight laps from the end of the Coke Zero Sugar 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway.

A total of 14 vehicles were involved in the accident on lap 152.

Race leader Michael McDowell spun, slid across the field and was hit by Joey Logano on the inside lane, sending McDowell's No. 34 Mustang flying.

For some reason, McDowell did not roll over and the car landed upright, but was out of the race.

In addition to McDowell and Logano, Kyle Larson, Justin Haley, Tyler Reddick and Bubba Wallace were also involved in the accident.

The race was restarted after the yellow phase with three laps to go. Josh Berry crashed after a failed attack two laps before the end and had to go into overtime.

An accident earlier in the race caused by Corey LaJoie, who badly pushed Noah Gragson, involved 17 cars.
