Cyclone roller coaster at Coney Island closed after safety incident

The New York City Department of Public Works has issued two violations to Luna Park following an incident involving Cyclone, the nearly 100-year-old roller coaster at Coney Island.

The violations include lack of maintenance due to the broken sprocket and failure to report the incident to the DOB.

The Cyclone will remain closed until necessary repairs have been made and the facility has passed inspection.

Due to a crack in the sprocket, the ride had to be evacuated mid-ride on Thursday. Officials were then forced to stop the roller coaster and safely remove all passengers from the vehicle.

Reactions from local residents were mixed. Alexis Gabriele, a regular visitor to Coney Island, expressed concerns about the ride.

“It always feels like there's going to be a problem,” said Gabriele. “I wouldn't do it again.”

Another resident, Neisha Worrell, echoed this sentiment, calling the cyclone “super-scary.”

The Cyclone is an iconic part of Coney Island, but for now it sits unused while it waits for the green light from safety inspectors.
