Pep Guardiola gives update on Mateo Kovacic injury after Man City's win over Ipswich Town

Pep Guardiola has provided an injury update on Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic after he was forced off during the 4-1 win over Ipswich Town.

It was a chaotic start to the game for Manchester City. They conceded a sloppy goal after seven minutes and Ederson's attempts to prevent the goal were questionable.

But Pep Guardiola's team reacted decisively. Savinho put in an exceptional performance, winning a penalty just five minutes after the opening goal, which Erling Haaland converted.

Then, within minutes, two goals from Kevin de Bruyne and Haaland put City back in the lead, 3-1, before the Premier League newcomers even had time to blink.

City's Norwegian star scored another goal late in the second half to secure his hat-trick, shortly after Ilkay Gundogan made his second debut for the club following his signing from Barcelona earlier in the week.

Mateo Kovacic, who was named man of the match in City's opening game against Chelsea, also played solidly in Rodri's absence.

But after a problem at the beginning of the second half, Guardiola took no risks and substituted John Stones for the Croatian in the 50th minute.

Speaking to the media after the game, Guardiola admitted that although he had not yet spoken to the club doctors, he believed it was only a minor injury and that the midfielder could be fit in time for the next game.

“I haven't spoken to the doctors. I think it was a blow. Liam Delap, we know from here, is very aggressive in this regard,” said the boss.

“We have six, seven days until the next game and we will see if he can recover.”

Manchester City's last game before the September international break is against West Ham at the London Stadium next Saturday.
