Atlantic City man pleads guilty to murder of Ventnor resident in 2018

MAYS LANDING, NJ — Angelo Delgado, 22, of Atlantic City, pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree murder in connection with the 2018 killing of Sunil Edla, a 61-year-old Ventnor resident. Delgado, who was 16 at the time of the crime, agreed to a recommended sentence of 30 years in New Jersey State Prison, where he must serve the full term without the possibility of parole.

During the trial, Delgado admitted to shooting Edla while attempting to steal his car. The incident occurred on November 15, 2018, when Ventnor City Police received a 911 call at 8:04 p.m. reporting a man lying in a driveway on N. Nashville Avenue. Officers who arrived found Edla with suspected gunshot wounds in front of 6 N. Nashville Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Edla's vehicle, a 2002 Subaru Forester, was missing but was later located by Atlantic City Police in the 1600 block of Sewell Avenue. A swift investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit, Ventnor City Police and Atlantic City Police led to the identification of Delgado as the suspect. He was arrested without incident by the Atlantic City SWAT team in the 1500 block of Sewell Avenue on the morning of November 16, 2018.

Delgado, who was originally charged with murder, auto theft, robbery and weapons offenses, was released from juvenile court and will now face trial as an adult. Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Robinson is representing the state in the case. Sentencing is scheduled for September.
