Kolkata doctor case: Lie detector test of sole arrested accused begins

Kolkata, Aug 25: The lie detector test of Sanjay Roy, the only accused arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a junior doctor at government-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, began on Sunday afternoon, sources said.

The test will be conducted at the Presidency Central Correctional Home in south Kolkata, where Roy has been lodged since a lower court in Kolkata sentenced him to 14 days' judicial custody on August 23.

Roy, a volunteer, is the only person arrested in the case so far.

Meanwhile, sources added, the process of polygraph tests of six more people in the case, which began on Saturday afternoon at the CBI's Salt Lake office on the northern outskirts of Kolkata, will continue on Sunday too.

The process is time-consuming as tests are not conducted for everyone at the same time, the sources said.

The other six accused, on whom the CBI's lie detector tests can be conducted after approval from a lower court in Kolkata, include former and controversial principal of RG Kar, Dr Sandip Ghosh, another volunteer and close confidant of Roy, and four medical students of RG Kar who were in the same building on the hospital premises where the crime took place.

Meanwhile, the strength of CBI officials was increased in the afternoon and they conducted a raid and search at Ghosh's residence in Beliaghata (Central Kolkata).

On Sunday morning, a total of seven CBI officials, including women, reached Dr Ghosh's residence for a raid and search. At around 1.30 pm, six more officials joined the raid team.

Besides Dr Ghosh's residence, other teams of the central agency are conducting parallel raids and searches at three other locations. These include the residences of former medical superintendent and deputy director of RG Kar, Sanjay Vashisth, in Entally; the hospital's forensic medicine department protester, Debasish Som Keshtopur, on the northern outskirts of Kolkata; and medical equipment supplier Biplab Sinha in Howrah district.

The raid and search operations are being carried out in connection with the massive financial irregularities at RG Kar when it was under Ghosh's command. According to sources, the CBI officials were conducting a multi-angle investigation into the financial irregularities case at the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital involving 15 specific allegations of forgery.
