A missing father and son were found dead in a mobile home in Isabella County, Michigan, earlier this week, sparking a murder-suicide investigation, according to reports.

The local sheriff's office said the child, a 6-year-old, was reported missing on Monday, local station WNEM reported. His mother told authorities the boy was with his father and would be returned to her care after custody visitation.

Isabella County Sheriff Michael Main told another local outlet: WPBN that officers did not find her at her father's home and family members were unable to reach her for 24 hours.

This reportedly prompted a relative to smash the window of a mobile home on the father's property on Wednesday.

“The family arrived at the property and began searching for the two. A family member decided to break a window of a mobile home that was located at the back of the property,” a statement from the sheriff's office said, according to Fox 2. “When this happened, they could see a man who appeared to be dead.”

Authorities confirm death of father and son

Main said the family member discovered the 48-year-old father was dead, media reported. When authorities arrived, they used a tool to force entry into the RV.

According to reports, authorities found gunshot wounds to both the father and son and concluded that the man committed suicide after fatally shooting the child.

The Isabella County Sheriff's Office and the Michigan State Police Crime Lab are investigating the case.

The identities of father and son have not been made public. Isabella County is about 80 miles from Grand Rapids.
